Campagnolo launches HPPM Power Meter for road bikes

Campagnolo has introduced its first spider-based power meter with the launch of the High Precision Power Measurement (HPPM) Power Meter.

The all-new HPPM Power Meter features 16 sensors (strain gauges) and one gyroscope, designed to give riders precise and reliable power measurement.

Headline technical detail from the launch announcement:

  • Power data is obtained from a real-time crossing of torque value with the angular velocity provided by the integrated gyroscope.
  • 16 strain gauges produce multiple readings, which, combined with a specific algorithm, deliver an accuracy of +/- 1%, thanks to high-frequency data sampling.
  • The angular velocity and torque signals are measured every five milliseconds.
  • A very high frequency, equal to 200 hertz, provides the clearest possible reading of the data.
  • Emphasising high data stability, the HPPM Power Meter features auto compensation for temperature variation.

Equipped with an Ultra-Torque titanium axle and unidirectional carbon fibre cranks, available in 170, 172.5 and 175 millimetres, HPPM-equipped cranksets are available with 3 chainring options: 45-29, 48-32, and 50-34.

The launch announcement states a 172.5mm crankset, including bearings and screws, fitted with 45-29 chainrings, weighs in at 656g.

The new My Campy 3.0 app enables system calibration in just a few steps and shows the battery charge status – a single charge lasts for over a month and charging time is just under four hours – all via an intuitive interface.

Worth noting here: The battery is also listed as “serviceable” which is encouraging for long-term usability and ownership.

Sticking with that long-term usability theme, the HPPM Power Meter system is also IP67 rated (dust-tight and watertight up to depths of 1 meter for thirty minutes), ensuring it is ready to repeatedly face the worst of British winter weather.

With the new HPPM Power Meter, the Campagnolo ecosystem expands whilst maintaining the same magnetic charging connector as the other components of the Super Record Wireless groupset.

Campagnolo in 2024

The Vicenza, Italy-based business has already been busy this year, with the launch of Ekar GT coinciding with COREbike.

The new gravel groupset also came with a wheelset, Zonda GT, providing a complete package at a price point aimed at introducing the brand to a wider gravel audience. The range of ratios offered by Ekar GT is also designed to enable wider use, making it a viable bikepacking option, moving the brand into new territory, beyond the Ekar ‘flat out and fast’ gravel racing focus.

For UK retailers keen to explore new Campagnolo products, Chicken Cyclekit are the longstanding UK distributor.
