Vittoria introduces carbon footprint analysis for tyres

Anyone using a bicycle can now make more environmentally conscious tyre purchases, utilising new carbon footprint analysis available across the entire Vittoria tyre range.

Vittoria now indicates the carbon footprint of each tyre directly through their website, empowering bike users to make greener tyre choices.

After two years of development with Deloitte, Vittoria has introduced a comprehensive tool based on the UNI EN ISO 14067:2018 Systematic Approach.

Externally certified by Bureau Veritas in June 2024, this tool provides detailed data on the CO2 emissions produced during the lifecycle of each tyre, giving people the transparency needed to make informed, environmental impact-considered, decisions.

A systematic approach to carbon footprint analysis

The UNI EN ISO 14067:2018 with the Systematic Approach was chosen as it is the reference standard for carbon footprint measurements which ensures a consistent and thorough analysis across all product lines.

Lifecycle Stages Considered

Vittoria’s carbon footprint calculation methodology employs a cradle-to-grave approach, encompassing the following stages of a tyre’s lifecycle:

1. Upstream Production and Transportation: This stage considers the sourcing and transportation of raw materials, with emission data derived from industry averages available from official databases such as Ecoinvent.

2. Core Process: This involves the primary production processes occurring in Vittoria Tyres’ Thailand plants, with site-specific data.

3. Distribution: This stage includes logistics from Vittoria Tyres Thailand’s facility to regional warehouses and further to end-customer markets in America, Asia, and Europe.

4. End of Life: This final stage assesses the impact of tyre disposal, considering regional trends in energy recovery, landfill, and recycling.

Findings and consumer empowerment

With this approach, Vittoria tyres release an average of 6.5 kg CO2eq throughout their life cycle.
To put this information into perspective, a person could offset this impact by cycling approximately 68 km instead of using a car.

Vittoria invites consumers to use these values to compare products within its offering.

Due to the lack of common metrics and data sources, Vittoria points out that comparing its products with those outside of Vittoria’s range may not always be like-for-like possible, and may lead to inconsistent and unclear conclusions.

Future Commitment

This pioneering effort underscores Vittoria’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The company continues to innovate and embrace practices that not only elevate the performance of its products but also contribute positively to the planet.

In the UK Vittoria is distributed by Madison.
