Duncan Kennedy: 1988-2024, ceremony to be held next week with everyone welcome

The details for Duncan Kennedy’s funeral have been shared by Ison Distribution, on behalf of his family, after he passed away earlier this year.

Kennedy will be a familiar face and name to many in the UK bike trade for his time at the Cambridgeshire-based distributor, specifically as the face of Surly Bikes in the UK.

After the news of his passing was announced in early July, Ison released the below statement.

It reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Duncan Kennedy, our colleague and friend.

“Duncan was the face of Surly Bikes in the UK and a key member of the Ison sales team. Many of you will recognise Duncan as a regular visitor to anything that involved bikes, well known for his big heart and that amazing beard.

“Duncan will be sorely missed by all of us at Ison along with the wider cycling community and all of those that had the pleasure of meeting him. Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family.”

A ceremony to celebrate Kennedy’s life will be held at 11am on Wednesday, August 7, at the Woodland Glade Natural Burial area in Maldon, with a reception to follow from 12pm at Goldhanger Village Hall.

The service will be held outside and Duncan’s family has said that everyone is welcome.

Attendees are invited to take a small piece of paper with a private message, memory, or wish for Duncan that can be placed on his casket to be buried with him. Flowers, petals, and earth will be provided to scatter as well.

Following this will be a reception from 12pm at Goldhanger Village Hall for the chance to meet many of Duncan’s friends, colleagues, drinking buddies and cycling companions.

There’ll be an informal buffet, and there’s a pub at the end of the road for anyone who fancys a beer.

A member of Duncan’s family added: “It will make us very happy to see lots of friendly faces – especially bearded ones.”

Anyone planning to attend is asked to send an email to sales@ison-distribution.com if you haven’t already RSVP’d to the Ison Dealer email sent on Friday, so that the distributor can let the family know an idea of numbers.

Those intending to go with colleagues/friends are asked to provide numbers for any groups to assist with planning.

The family has asked that flowers are not brought to the ceremony and is instead encouraging donations to the British Heart Foundation via: duncankennedy.muchloved.com

Further information for the ceremony can be found on the attachment at the bottom of this article.

BikeBiz joins the wider cycling community in sending our thoughts and deepest condolences to Duncan’s family, friends and colleagues at Ison and Surly during this time.
