Bicycles and Tandems by Design celebrates 20 years in Telford

Bicycles and Tandems by Design, one of the UK’s leading bicycle design and manufacturing businesses are celebrating two decades of success in Telford, Shropshire.

Based in the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the company operates within the historic John Rose Building in Coalport, the earliest surviving structure of the famous Coalport China Works.

Known for its craftsmanship and bespoke designs, the business caters to a wide range of cyclists, from leisure and commuter riders to elite athletes and Paralympians, with customers from across the UK and beyond.

The business recently benefited from a UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) small grant, awarded by Telford and Wrekin Council’s Invest Telford team. The funding has supported Bicycles and Tandems by Design in refurbishing its studio and workshop, helping the company continue its commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Peter Bird, founder and owner of Bicycles and Tandems by Design, said: “Celebrating 20 years in the Ironbridge Gorge is a moment of pride for us. Our location is perfect for a business that values sustainability and innovation, and we are thrilled to have grown alongside this wonderful community.

“The support from Invest Telford through the UKSPF fund has been instrumental in helping us take this next step in our journey. Next year, we have many exciting initiatives rolling out that will benefit both our customers and our community.”

Councillor Ollie Vickers, Telford and Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Economy added: “Bicycles and Tandems by Design is a shining example of how innovative businesses thrive in Telford. Their commitment to sustainability and the local economy is inspiring, and this milestone is a testament to their hard work and vision. We’re proud to have supported them through Invest Telford’s funding programmes.”

Councillor Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability and Ward Councillor for the Ironbridge Gorge, said: “Bicycles and Tandems by Design reflect the values of our community – sustainability, creativity, and a passion for preserving our heritage. Their contribution to the Ironbridge Gorge and the wider borough has been immense, and I congratulate them on 20 years of success.”

Peter Bird began his career as a young graduate at Sir John Cass in London. After earning the Freedom of the Mystery of Goldsmiths in the City of London, he started in Hatton Garden’s prestigious Jewellery Quarter.

At 23, Peter transitioned to bicycles, combining bespoke design with expert craftsmanship. Over the years, he has worked with major international brands including Madison, Co-Motion, Dawes, Brooks, Duratec, and Campagnolo, building a legacy of precision design and exceptional customer service.

Dominic Langan, CEO of Madison Cycles, shared his congratulations “Congratulations to Bicycles and Tandems by Design on 20 remarkable years in the Gorge.
