Re-Cycle, the UK charity which sends unwanted bikes to Africa, has teamed up with Colchester-based cycling club, Velo Club Revolution, to host its annual Spring Sportive on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Each year, the non-competitive cycling event raises funds to enable Re-Cycle, one of the UK’s largest bicycle charities, to continue to improve lives by providing people in Africa with access to quality used bikes.
Starting and finishing at Re-Cycle’s warehouse in Wormingford, just outside of Colchester, organisers are keen to encourage capable cyclists of all abilities to take up the challenge and give the event a try.
It offers two routes of either 64 or 40 miles that will see an anticipated 50 riders pedal along the region’s rural roads through villages such as Bures, Clare, Great Yeldham, Long Melford and Stoke By Nayland.
Olympic and World Champion cyclist Chris Boardman – the patron of Re-Cycle – is supporting the event and will be on hand to cheer on cyclists over the finish line.
Charlotte Ward, director of Re-Cycle, said: “The Spring Sportive is one of our favourite fundraising events of the year – it’s great to see so many cyclists of all abilities getting on their bikes to enjoy the great outdoors, boost their fitness levels and help raise vital funds for our charity.
“A huge thanks to Velo Club Revolution who ensure the routes are well designed and safe. Plus, this year we are delighted to welcome our patron Chris Boardman who we know will be a great inspiration to riders as well as to Re-Cycle’s many volunteers and supporters.”
Boardman, an advocate for Re-Cycle’s work and the transformative power of bicycles, will also deliver a post ride talk followed by a Q&A session.
Nick Epsom, chair of VC Revolution, added: “We’re looking forward to welcoming cyclists from across Essex and Suffolk, whatever their levels of cycling fitness or confidence. Riding in a group is a great way to get motivated and learn about road riding and we ensure our routes are well signposted and as safe as they can be.”
Everyone who signs up to the Spring Sportive before Tuesday, April 30, 2024 can take part for a £20 early bird entry fee.
